Seeds are the critical agri-input on which hinges the performance of all other inputs. The recent agricultural growth has been spurred by the seeds, of improved varieties and hybrids. Through advances in biotechnology, seeds have shown great potential in increasing yields, reducing costs and improving quality of produce. Years of intensive technology upgradation has perfected India and world's seed potential to feed a rapidly multiplying population. Seeds have consistently influenced the course of global food security.

India's ascent to being the power center of agriculture was primarily driven through improved seeds. With a spirited approach and support from the government, the industry has been successfully delivering quality seeds to Indian farmers. Today Indian seed industry is ranked fifth in the world with a promising future ahead of it. With the industry and the State Governments going aggressive on providing every farmer high quality seeds through Seeds Valley concept and Seeds Village programs, the demand for quality seeds may further accelerate @ 14% CAGR and is likely to double every 4 years. India is also emerging as the seed supply hub for the African continent.

However, there are some major challenges related to the development of the seed sector, which needs to be addressed for the Indian seed industry to unlock its true potential. R&D has been mostly restricted to high value seeds. Seed Replacement Rate is also far from desirable in India. The broader consensus on GM seeds, and streamlining regulatory systems need to be addressed at the earliest. INDIA SEED SUMMIT 2023 thus becomes a significant step towards bringing together the stakeholders from around the nation on a single platform to discuss business, policy, trade, technology, regulatory, investment and partnership related issues to evolve steps for the holistic development of the seed industry.
